CHAPTER 21

BAILEY

If my sister did put that book of her paintings together, she had gone to a lot of trouble for no reason.

I wasn’t going to marry Zachary. He wouldn’t even kiss me. He’d kissed me once and now he wouldn’t kiss me again.

The kicker was I wanted him to.

Maybe I shouldn’t have accused him of having a silver tongue. Of being a man who couldn’t be trusted.

The truth was, I didn’t know what to make of him.

He shows up. He vanishes. Then he shows up again.

For all I knew, he would simply vanish again. I looked at him sideways.

He was painfully handsome. Even more handsome without his mask than he had been with it. Even without it, I had recognized him immediately.

Something tickled the back of my brain, but I pushed it away.

Zachary found a decanter of whiskey and filled two glasses. He handed me one.

I sniffed it and wrinkled my nose, then I drank it anyway, draining the glass.

Zachary looked at me in disbelief.

“Did you just drink that?”

“Yes,” I said.

He sniffed his own glass. “This is strong,” he said. “Do you… drink… a lot?

“I never drink,” I said.

He cursed under his breath.

“It’s okay,” I said. “It was just a little bit in the glass.” But I was feeling a bit… light-headed.

“A little of this goes a long way,” he said, setting his aside.

“Aren’t you going to drink yours?” I asked.

“Not now,” he said. “I’m your designated driver.”

“My what?” My lips were feeling pleasantly tingly.

“A gentleman never drinks when his lady is drinking.”

I grinned. “Am I your lady?”

“Yes,” he said. “I think you are.”

“Good,” I said. “My lips are numb.”

“I’m sure they are,” he said. “Maybe you should lie down.”

“I’m not sleepy.”

“If you’ll lie down, I’ll rub your feet.”

“That would be scandalous,” I said. “You can’t do that.”

“Come on,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.”

“I’m not afraid,” I said, with a quick glance toward the door. “But...”

Then I remembered what I had been thinking about earlier. The thing that had been teasing the back of my mind.

If Zachary was going to leave anyway, no one ever had to know that he had kissed me. And no one ever had to know that he had rubbed my feet.

I could be positively scandalous with him. Then he would vanish. And I could go back to being myself.

“Okay,” I said. “You can rub my feet.”

“Here,” he said, patting his knees. “Feet.”

I put my feet in his lap.

“Get comfortable,” he said.

So I did. I leaned back and closed my eyes.

This was probably going to get me into so much trouble.

But, I decided, my logic was sound.

Zachary slowly pulled off one of my boots, then the other, putting them on the floor.

It tickled, having him touch my bare feet.

And Oh. My. God. It felt so very good.

He massaged everything from my toes to the back of my ankles.

And I was so relaxed.

I felt so safe with him.
